Shoulder bursitis is characterized by shoulder pain, tenderness, and possible swelling over the area.
Shoulder pain can occur at the top, front, or side of the shoulder. Direct shoulder injury or repetitive shoulder motions are the main causes of shoulder bursitis.
The bursa is a small sac filled with synovial fluid that helps cushion the tendons and muscles as they move over particularly bony areas. Inflammation of the bursa can be very painful. Many activities can lead to shoulder bursitis such as golf, tennis, squash, pitching, swimming, and weight training.
