5 Main Obstacles to Correcting Scoliosis-Lakewood
1. The Root Cause. The root cause of a scoliosis is a root problem that causes the spine to bend and twist. A root cause will be some type of problem that can create a “driving force” to cause the spine to bend and twist. All too often the root cause of scoliosis is ignored, undiagnosed, and untreated. If you don’t want the weed to come back, get down to the root and pull it all the way out. The same is true for scoliosis. If you want to get rid of the problem once and for all, eliminate the root cause.
What is CAUSING this spine to bend and twist? If it is possible to identify and eliminate the root cause of a scoliosis, the condition can be stopped, or even cured.
2. Soft-Tissue Distortion (Contractures of Soft Tissue). As scoliosis takes root into the spine, eventually the spine loses its ability to move in certain directions. This loss of proper motion creates a significant and often severe form of stiffness called contractures.
Joint contractures are common in medicine. For example, a person who is bedridden for 1-2 weeks can develop contractures. Contractures are common after surgery if the parts are not mobilized right away. In the spine, once a contracture begins to set in, it can become very resistant to correction.
Contractures in scoliosis can be broken into two main categories:
A. Shortened Soft Tissues: Shortened ligament, disc, muscles.
B. Elongated Soft Tissues: Elongated ligament, disc, muscles.
In scoliosis, soft tissue grows short on the concave sides, and grows too long or too stretched on the convex sides. Shortened tissue must be stretched and elongated. Conversely, the tissue on the over-stretched concave sides must actually be shortened—or allowed to grow short—typically by holding the over-stretched tissue in a shortened position for an extended period of time.
3. Neuro-Muscular Dysfunction. Neuro-Muscular Dysfunction means that the neuro-muscular system—muscles, along with the nervous system that controls the muscle tone—is not working correctly. This is further broken down into conscious posture control and sub-conscious posture control.
Loss of Subconscious Positional Awareness. Specifically, the part of the nervous system that controls balance and posture can become confused and mistake the scoliotic position as the correct “aligned” posture of the spine (this is an oversimplification of a complex process involving the cerebellum, vestibular, and proprioceptive components of the nervous system). The “muscular” portion of this dysfunction can be simplified as saying that muscles become asymmetric in strength and length: too short and too long, too strong vs. too weak. The brain and the body’s position sense become accustomed to the scoliosis.
Loss of Conscious Positional Awareness. This could best be described as “bad posture habits” and “bad biomechanics.” It is easy to adapt poor postures and ways of moving that actually make the scoliosis worse. And it is easy to engage in such poor posture and damaging biomechanics all day long. All the activities the patient performs throughout the day—how they sit, study, work, play, and sleep—can either be making their scoliosis worse, or making their scoliosis better. Re-learning proper posture and biomechanics that encourage better alignment of the spine must become a 24/7 endeavor.
4. Bone Distortion. Early changes in bone shape. Late changes in bone shape.
5. Gravity. As the curve becomes larger, gravity can become the main “driving force.” Whatever was the original cause of the curve can become less of an issue than gravity itself. Gravity probably becomes the main driving force somewhere between the 25 and 40 degree range.
