In healthcare a spasm is a sudden, involuntary contraction of a muscle, a group of muscles, or a hollow organ such as a heart, or a similarly sudden contraction of an orifice. It most commonly refers to a muscle cramp which is often accompanied by a sudden burst of pain, but is usually harmless and ceases after a few minutes. There is a variety of other causes of involuntary muscle contractions, which may be more serious, depending on the cause.

Muscle spasm results from inflammation that occurs when a muscle is overstretched or torn. It begins as a muscle strain, which doesn’t sound like a serious injury, but it can cause severe low back pain.

Muscle strains are also known as a pulled muscle. When the muscles in the lower back are strained or torn, the area around the muscles can become inflamed. With inflammation, the muscles can spasm leading to severe low back pain and difficulty moving. Lower back pain from a muscle strain occurs most frequently after lifting a heavy object, lifting while twisting, or a sudden movement or fall. The pain is usually localized, meaning it doesn’t radiate to the leg. The area may be sore to the touch, the patient usually feels better when resting.

Our Approach

To fix a back spasm we must correct the spinal alignment. To do this we utilize a three dimensional postural analysis to identify the relationships between the head, torso, hips, legs and feet.

The secret to correcting the spinal alignment involves changing nerve muscle memory by influencing slow and fast nerve receptors to tell muscles to pull differently, thus aligning the spine. Posture specific adjustment, mirror image chirometrex exercises and simple office and home rehab are done with predicable results.

When spinal alignment is restored to its normal model, not only are symptoms and spasms relieved, but long standing spinal correction is achieved for better stability and function.

A simple maintenance program is given to each patient so they can maintain the normal spinal alignment throughout their lifetime. Maintaining a correction is smarter and more cost effective then “managing a problem” which can inevitably become permanent.
