Snapping Hip Syndrome
Popping Hip-Lakewood Chiropractor
Snapping hip syndrome is a condition in which you hear a popping sound or feel a snapping
Snapping sensation in your hip movements. Most times this condition does not cause any other symptoms, however in some cases it can become a long term painful condition. The snapping sound comes from a tendon moving over a bony structure in the pelvis or hip.
Externally the muscle tendon on the side of the hip, (Iliotibial band) or the tendon of the gluteus maximus rolls over the bony prominence on the side of hip ( greater trochanter ), when you bend your hip. (Fig A)
Internally, the hip flexor (iliopsoas) tendon popping over the iliopectineal eminence on the pelvic bone, or the hip capsule, causes the snapping sound mostly when extending your flexed, abducted, and externally rotated hip.
The popping initially is the only symptom experienced, however as time goes on, bursitis can develop which can lead to a painful and debilitating condition when this occurs, the symptoms can last months or years.
Activities that can cause the snapping hip syndrome include, dancing, ballet, squats, running (particularly uphill), track and field, soccer, and gymnastics.
Our Approach
Traditionally, Popping hip is treated with medications, rest, ice, and physical therapy. While each of these modalities can be helpful they fall short of bringing long-term improvement in reducing pain and increasing function.
There are parallel changes in the surrounding tissues (fascia, ligaments, muscles, and tendons). These changes are also degenerative in nature and create trigger points, adhesions, and scarring.
When these areas are treated with our Chiropractic Biophysics Technique and The Pettibon Technique patients feel much better and can return to a much better quality of life.
Best of all, with proper care and tissue improvement, exercise becomes helpful not hurtful!
